Some 50 motorists caught in a roadblock conducted by the Royal Brunei Police Force for using shades while driving will be appearing in court.

The roadblock involving 17 traffic police, led by Sgt 2926 Kamaluddin, was conducted on Thursday morning at Jalan Gadong. Within one hour, the police managed to detain 50 vehicles for using shades.

According to Sgt 2926 Kamaluddin, "We are taking a stern action against this type of offence because using shades will limit the eye sight of the driver and endanger road users.

"We used to only give warning to drivers about the offence but this time we will start to take stern action."

The Panaga Police Reserve Unit team carrying out a roadblock along the main road of Kampong Sungai Teraban.

A family of three in Kampong Sungai Teraban, Kuala Belait had to endure terrifying moments when five masked men armed with parangs intruded into their house yesterday, robbed them of their valuables and left the husband and wife slightly injured but badly shaken.

The group of armed robbers, all believed to be foreigners, broke into the house at about 1am through the rear gate.

The house belongs to a man in his 40s who operates a business at the Belait market. When the incident happened, he was with his wife and 11-year-old child.

When contacted, the wife was unable to provide any details of the intrusion as she was traumatised by the incident.

According to sources, the head of the family suffered bruises near his eyes, while the wife sustained minor injuries on her hand. The robbers reportedly fled in three vehicles belonging to the family with cash, jewellery and mobile phones valued at $30,000. However, one of the stolen cars was recovered yesterday.

The Panaga Police Reserve Unit team conducted a roadblock along Kampong Sungai Teraban road, close to the victim's home and also along the road leading to Sungai Tujoh Control Post from 7am yesterday morning.

Kampong Sungai Teraban village head Awang Haji Mohd Mersidi bin Haji Mohd Shara said he came to know of the robbery after a resident informed him that police were conducting an investigation at the house around 5am.

He also said that he received several calls from the villagers who expressed concern that the robbers could still be lurking in the village.
The village head said he was unable to get information on the case from relevant parties.

"I am unable to provide accurate information to the villagers as I am not properly informed of the situation. I can only advise the villagers to exercise extra caution and make sure their homes are secured and locked," he said.

Police declined to provide further details but said they are investigating and a hunt is on for the culprits.

Road users are advised to avoid travelling at speeds above the limit as stated by the law, especially during wet weather conditions when roads become slippery.

By following the road rules and regulations, drivers will reach their destination safely.

It is important that road users do not take advantage of long, straight and smooth roads by driving at reckless speeds as this can lead to fatalities as well as drastically increase the volume of traffic in the area.

An accident happened right in front of the Istana Nurul Iman yesterday (photo above), but fortunately no injuries were reported.

Police investigating at the scene.
A car after it overturned.

An accident involving three vehicles occurred yesterday around 2pm near the Public Works Department's (JKR's) Water Plant in Pekan Bangar, causing a massive traffic jam along the Batang Duri road leading to the town.

One saloon car was damaged after being hit by another and a third car overturned. One of the drivers, a local man, was rushed to the PIHM Temburong hospital to receive further treatment.

The cars that were involved had blocked the road so other vehicles could not get through. The police as well as Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

It took some 30 minutes to remove the affected cars from the road and for the traffic flow to return to normal.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. In relation to this incident, the police continue to remind road users to always be cautious when driving, especially maintain the speed limit to avoid accidents from occurring.
