Police operate a speed-recording device aimed at busting speedsters.

Personnel of the Royal Brunei Police Force in cooperation with the Land Transport Department conduct roadblocks at the Muara-Tutong highway (ABOVE) and near Bukit Shahbandar (BELOW).

A nationwide operation conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Control Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force in cooperation with the Land Transport Department continued yesterday with roadblocks set up at several locations in the Belait, Temburong and Brunei-Muara Districts.

In the Brunei-Muara District, a team of 17 personnel led by Samsudin bin Hj Bidin and assisted by Kamaluddin bin Hj Othman focussed on the Muara-Tutong highway near the Bukit Shahbandar Recreational Park. In the operation, 47 irresponsible and reckless drivers were pulled over for speeding over the limit, with one summons being handed out to a driver for having made illegal vehicular modifications and one case of a driver not knowing how to properly use a road lane.

Meanwhile, 23 personnel led by Muhd Nadi Nabillah bin Muhd Musa and assisted by LCPL Muhd Shariman Hardi bin Hj Alisa monitored the Telanai-Jalan Tutong traffic lights, where 20 drivers jumped the red light.

In Jln Labu in Temburong, a team of 14 personnel led by Zini bin Abdullah and assisted by Dyg Armah binti Yussof compiled 10 compound cases courtesy of reckless drivers who were speeding above the limit.

Traffic personnel of Batu 3 in Seria also pulled over 53 drivers who were speeding over the limit at Kg Serambangun, Tutong.

The operation will continue throughout the final days of Ramadhan in an effort to curb the road accident rate, improve upon the actual enforcement of road regulations and raise public awareness of road safety.

On Tuesday, a joint speeding operation conducted by 16 personnel of the Traffic Control and Investigation Department in cooperation with the Land Transport Department resulted in 50 compound cases being issued at Kg Tanjung Maya, Tutong in the morning. In the afternoon an operation in Kg Serambangun, Tutong, resulted in 56 compound cases being issued.

In light of the very high incident rate of vehicular accidents in the Sultanate, the RBPF is only now truly striving to improve its presence in the eyes of the public as a deterrent to everyday irresponsible and reckless drivers who pay no consideration to the safety of others.

The large-scale operations are also being used as an opportunity to educate the public regarding the Demerit Points System Campaign ahead of its official implementation in mid-2013.

A female driver yesterday escaped serious injury after she was involved in a two-car collision along the Seria-Kuala Belait bypass at around 4pm. The woman, driving a saloon car, was heading in the direction of Lumut when an SUV suddenly exited a junction, resulting in the collision which sent the woman's car to the other side of the road. Fortunately, both drivers, including the man driving the SUV, walked away unscathed following the collision at the T-junction.

Section of the officers, personnel and staff during the review session.

Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications speaking at the event.

The traffic law enforcement agency will soon be able to nab errant motorists with the installation of unmanned speed cameras and traffic light cameras.

The authority, however, has not revealed much about the new speed trap gadgetry, but the "unmanned camera technology" is in the "next phase of implementation", alongside other technologies that could help enforcement agencies apprehend road traffic violators more effectively and efficiently.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Hj Awg Mohd Taha revealed that additional important modules will be implemented and integrated with the Land Transport System (SPD), including the Appeal System, Notification Module, Reporting Management and Integration Modules.

In a speech during the 'Demerit Points System (DPS) Mid-Trail Period Review Session' between the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Department of Land Transport, Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin revealed that the number of people issued compound fines and demerit points in the last three months had reached 585 offenders in eight different categories of violations.

He said, out of the total violations recorded, 288 cases were due to "over-the-limit speeding" and 75 cases were due to traffic light violations.

"These habitual tendencies are worrying and must be avoided in order to meet the main objective of the Demerit Points System, which is to create responsible and courteous drivers," he said.

From the total number above, 39 warning letters had already been sent and one driving licence suspension had been recorded.

Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin said yesterday's session was held to review the effectiveness of the project and to address issues identified respectively by the RBPF and Land Transport Department throughout the three-month pilot implementation of the project.

The session was also used to address public feedback gathered during previous roadshows, which he said is important so as to find or create a "business process" that is more effective and efficient.

After three months of implementing the system at its trial stage, several issues relating to "the business process" have been identified, which will provide an initial platform before the full implementation of the system in 2013.

Dato Paduka Hj Awg Alaihuddin also urged the public to continue to provide ideas towards making the Demerit Points System successful once it is fully implemented.

He said the main issues that have been given due attention include collection and data entry of demerit points through PDA and manual methods; diversification of law enforcement methods; and suitability of offences that must be given demerit points and the number of points that should correctly be given.

The session allowed for the drawing of lessons and comparisons to other countries with similar systems.

Among those present were Transport Policy Acting Director Dr Hj Supry Hj Awg Ladi and Land Transport Department Director Hj Khalid bin Hj Mustafa, as well as personnel from the Transport Policy, Road Safety Unit, Royal Brunei Police Force, Land Transport Department and the Ministry of Communications itself.

Police conducting the roadblock operation along the Anduki-Seria road.

Despite the fasting month, traffic police from the Traffic Control and Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force, Belait Branch, stood under the scorching sun to conduct a roadblock operation along Jalan Anduki Seria.

More than 20 motorists were issued with speeding tickets and compound fines for overtaking on the double white lines.

All vehicles passing through the road were subjected to inspections during the roadblock, whereby authorities were eyeing illegal car modifications and expired road tax, among other violations.

The operation was conducted with the purpose of reminding motorists of the road regulations, and was part of ongoing efforts to ensure that Brunei roads are accident-free during the fasting month.
