Car lies on its side following the accident along the highway in Tutong District.
Three-car accident along Anduki road left a 60-year-old man with injuries.

Road accidents in Brunei show no signs of abating, which is a worrying sign.

Based on police log, in the month of February alone, nearly 215 accidents were recorded with 58 during a stretch of just four days.
Yesterday, two accidents were reported along the Tutong-Muara highway and Seria-Tutong highway in Tutong District with one sustaining serious injuries.

On Saturday night, a 60-year-old Bruneian man was injured in a collision involving three vehicles.
The crash, involving a SUV vehicle, a van and a saloon vehicle, occurred along the Anduki road at about 10pm.

With the increase in accidents, many people are eager that the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Action Plan is implemented more speedily and vigorously to save lives and limbs.

The people appreciate the initiatives the authorities have taken especially the proposed establishment of the Centre for Road Safety Studies launched at Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) to conduct research and come out with a plan to curb the accident numbers.

They also welcomed the suggestion of road safety briefing in schools at different levels.

Awang Mohd Ansor, 32, a local teacher told the Borneo Bulletin, "More and more young people are having cars these days.

"They feel the false power when behind the wheel. They are also immature and sometimes are unable to control their emotions. Accidents therefore happen. There should be more frequent road safety lectures and games in schools."

Mohd Nur Azmi bin Haji Md Yussop, 28, who works for Baiduri Finance, said, "There have been increasing accidents among young motorists recently. I welcome a move towards more intensive education.

"We pick up bad habits when we are young and these could be with us for life. So early education is important," he added.

"The standard of our driving schools should also be improved," he said.
A nurse at RIPAS Hospital, Dayang Yazmin Abdul Latip, commented, "We see more youths coming in with accident injuries in recent times. I agree early intervention at home and in schools is very important."

It is noted that as far back as in year 2004/2005, a road safety expert from Asian Development Bank visited Brunei to prepare a guideline for road safety action when a 14-sector action plan was set up whereby each agency responsible was to conduct the action plan.
In October 2007, Brunei Road Safety Council with the support of ITB analysed the road safety action plan at the national level focusing on immediate action in the short term as well as a continued plan.

Since then Brunei has continued its efforts to implement Brunei Road Safety Action Plan with new initiatives, but at a slower pace than desired, some safety conscious citizens said.

Immediate and short-term implementation plans included the introduction of de-merit points system, speed camera (stationary), expanding the Road Safety Secretariat and capacity building for driving school.

However, some observers have pointed out that there is a need for better coordination among various departments to stem the rising number of accidents.

Fire and Rescue personnel extinguishing the car blaze.
Firefighters at the scene.

Flames engulfed a car amid heavy traffic yesterday afternoon near Kumbang Pasang building in Gadong.

The fire was believed to have been caused by loose wiring in the car battery, the Fire and Rescue Department said, adding that total loss was estimated to be around $7,000.

It caused a traffic jam to and from the Hassanal Bollkiah Highway as curious onlookers slowed down their vehicles.

The Fire and Rescue Department said it received a distress call at 2.26pm and six personnel from Beribi rushed in a fire engine to the scene.

Traffic police were also seen monitoring the traffic flow. No one was injured.

* The golden yellow outline symbolises Brunei being a country ruled by the Sultan entrusted to administer the country through sources blessed by Allah S.W.T.The triangular outline symbolises efforts towards achieving and supporting the call for Zikir Nation, in line with the nation’s Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy.

Two cars lie in a ditch following the collision along Jln Jangsak.
Cars wading through flashfloods triggered by the heavy rain.

The road along Jangsak saw long lines of vehicles as a result of the short-lived flashfloods that submerged some parts of the road.

Wet weather conditions continue to prevail in the country causing flashfloods and landslides.
The downpour last evening not only triggered flashfloods in many areas but also accidents across the capital. Seven accidents were recorded by the Royal Brunei Police Force between 6pm and 9pm in Jerudong, Lambak and Jangsak due to the heavy rain.
Two vehicles landed in a ditch in an accident along Jalan Jangsak around 8.30pm. The accident involving saloon cars, however, left both drivers and passengers of the cars unscathed.
According to the driver of one of the cars, he lost control of his car while turning at a sharp bend along Jln Jangsak, and as a result skidded and hit a car close by, with both cars landing in the ditch.

According to an eyewitness, Hj Wahyudin, visibility was really poor and puddles of rainwater made driving dangerous.

As the accident rate in Brunei is one of the highest in the region, efforts to bring awareness to stem the numbers are under way. But rain or shine, there are some motorists who refuse to take their legs off the accelerator resulting in accidents, which sometimes proves fatal too.
Rainy weather conditions have been predicted to continue over the next few days, according to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department web site.

A graph that has been posted on the site indicates that the mean rainfall throughout the Sultanate for today will be 40 millimetres, which will gradually reduce to 20 millimetres a day until the 23rd of this month and to less than 10 millimetres between February 24 and March 3.

Last night's lashing caused major flooding along busy roads that led to heavy traffic.

The stretch along Jangsak road was heavily congested late last evening when the heavy rain started pouring at around 6.30pm that subsequently brought about a short-lived flashflood. When the Bulletin visited the area, it was noticed that some of the drains were overwhelmed by the torrent of water.

Police personnel were seen at various areas along the road to ease the traffic.

However, when contacted by the Bulletin, several government departments including the National Disaster Management Centre as well as the Fire and Rescue Department said they have not received any distress call as of 9pm.

The police has once again reminded motorists to drive slowly, especially during wet weather conditions, and always follow road rules and regulations for their own safety and that of fellow motorists.

A faulty wiring system in the engine was believed to be the cause of a fire involving a saloon vehicle yesterday. The Fire and Rescue Department received the distress call at 8.41 am, following which a fire truck (from Beribi) with six personnel led by ASO Hj Saman was dispatched to the scene in Kiarong. The fire, which resulted in $3,000 in damages, was extinguished before the arrival of fire personnel.
