Police personnel inspecting a vehicle during the roadblock.
Trucks and heavy vehicles stopped for inspections.
A total of 89 drivers of heavy and commercial vehicles yesterday were forced to send their vehicles for inspection at the Vehicle Inspection Centre of the Land Transport Department. The drivers were also instructed to retake the highway code test at the Sungai Akar Test Circuit after they were caught red-handed for violating the road traffic regulations during a surprise roadblock conducted by the Royal Brunei Police Force and Land Transport Department in the morning and afternoon.
The no-tolerant and no-compromise attitude came from the Royal Brunei Police Force through the Traffic Control and Investigation Department and the Enforcement Section under Land Transport Department following an accident that took place last Saturday at the Mentiri roundabout whereby a saloon car was sandwiched between two trucks.
According to Pengiran Sulaiman bin Pg Hj Mohammad, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Director of Traffic Control and Investigation, following thorough investigation, they found out that one of the truck's brake pumps were faulty.
"During our investigation, there was no trace of braking on the road. We also received various complaints on speeding trucks and lorries and we know that some of the heavy and commercial vehicles have disconnected the speed limit installed in the vehicles. This is a very serious offence," he said.
"In the morning, we caught 18 drivers of heavy vehicles who violated various traffic regulations. Their vehicles were sent to the Vehicles Inspection Centre and the drivers themselves have to undergo a test at the Sungai Akar Test Circuit," he said.
"We are putting our foot down on errant drivers and there will be no tolerance and compromise for any road traffic offender," he added.
"Should any of the drivers fail the test at Sungai Akar, the director has the right to revoke their driving licence," Hj Suaib, Senior Enforcement Officer at the Land Transport Department said.
Pengiran Sulaiman also said that if the drivers failed the test, that would prove that they are not fit to drive on the road.
Besides drivers of heavy vehicles, Pengiran Sulaiman said various road traffic offences including those using mobile phones while driving would also be subjected to re-sit the test at the Sungai Akar Test Circuit.
"If they commit serious road traffic offences, it shows that they don't know the road traffic regulations and are not qualified to drive and may endanger the life of other road users," he said.
The Director of Traffic Control and Investigation reiterated that the police force calls for the public to respect the law of the country.
Some of the traffic offences were driving with bald tyres, driving without insurance, expired road tax and driving licences as well as illegal modification of vehicles and others.
On errant drivers who illegally modified their vehicles, Director of Traffic Control and Investigation said that illegal modification of vehicles can endanger the life of other drivers.
"For example, the illegal modification of the front head lights that emit glaring lights at night can cause the driver in front driving under duress as well as impede their visibility which in turn can cause accidents," he said.
He iterated that all modification in vehicles must be done with the approval of the Land Transport Department.
The Director of Traffic Control and Investigation also revealed that a vendor will be brought to court for installing modified licence plate for vehicles.
He also highlighted that more efforts will be done in terms of raising awareness on the punishments for common road traffic offences to remind the public of the serious violations under road traffic regulations.
Following the road block, there was one summon case, 54 compound cases and 89 drivers of commercial vehicles caught in the afternoon session for various road traffic violations.

Traffic police jotting down the details of the road offenders.
"We are going to the root cause of this problem, the vendors, who provide and install these modifications like sun x (sunshade), fancy lights and car modifications, besides penalising the drivers themselves.
"We are going to interview the drivers to find out the vendor who installed the car accessories and we will take action against the vendor if it is proven," the Director of Traffic Control and Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force, SAC Pg Hj Sulaiman told the Bulletin yesterday.
"We are also mobilising our traffic police personnel to be on the move to catch errant drivers who use hand phones and text messages while behind the wheel, which are getting more rampant nowadays."
"The public has been asking the Brunei Road Safety Council what are we doing following the surge in road deaths for the fatalities to end," he added.
"Even though the roads are good, but if the drivers are still using mobile phones or text while driving, it would not solve the problem. Drivers need to adhere to the road traffic acts." He also wanted the media to interview errant drivers who violate the road traffic acts. It is not to shame them but to get them to speak as to why they do this.
Pg Hj Sulaiman yesterday met with police OCPDs from the four districts, Brunei Road Safety Council officers as well as officials from DST, B-Mobile and RTB for promotional activities to create awareness.
"It is puzzling to note that most of the accidents have occurred when the weather and road conditions are fine and traffic flow is smooth. Did the accidents happen because the drivers were using hand phones or texting while driving or did not fasten their seatbelts? We don't want to delay our investigation. That is why we seek cooperation from the telephone service providers.
"We have been conducting roadblocks to catch errant drivers. We find drivers using sunshade while driving at night which could obstruct their view leading to accidents," he added.
A major operation was conducted yesterday morning by the traffic police and enforcement officers from the Land Transport Department at the Kiarong roundabout where in just 45 minutes, 33 compounds were issued to drivers who did not follow the right lane when using the three-lane roundabout. The operation started at 9.45am and ended at 10.30am. Each was slapped with $50 compound.
Another operation was conducted yesterday morning at Kg Jangsak where dozens of drivers were caught using the side lane to overtake. "The public has been asking why we carried out the roadblock during rush hour when we managed to catch more offenders than during off peak hours. If the driver is responsible, then he would not commit such an offence," Pg Hj Sulaiman added.
1To date, 448 cases have been recorded since January this year with expired road tax followed by car modifications and applying sun-x topping the traffic police statistics.
The traffic police are getting tough with car accessory vendors in a latest move to curb rising road accidents in the country, in addition to penalising errant drivers amid surging road fatalities in the first 10 months of this year.
The traffic police are also on the road to nab errant drivers who use mobile phones and text while driving.
