The Department of Investigation of Traffic Control in Belait recorded a total of 23 cases of offence and issued compounds and court summons as personnel set up a roadblock at Jalan Tengah area yesterday.

Of the total offences, nine were slapped with compound fines, which included one case of bald tyres with visible tyre yarn, three cases of failing to carry road tax, one for jumping the red light at a junction, three cases of not abiding by licence plate regulations and one case of installation of body kit.

Meanwhile, 14 others were issued with court summons including two cases for expired road tax, 10 cases on installation of tinted glasses and two cases of low car suspension.

The inspection was conducted as a follow-up to the Road Safety Campaign organised by the Road Safety Council, which will be held for three months.

It began yesterday in the Belait District areas, whereas in Bandar Seri Begawan areas, it had already started last month.

A total of 40 police officers from the Investigation and Traffic Control Department of Bandar Seri Begawan and the Belait District have carried out inspections on vehicles.

The road safety campaign yesterday was led by Belait District Investigation and Traffic Control Department Duty Officer, Inspector Pengiran Aminul Sarni bin Pengiran Haji Saripuddin, and also monitoring the campaign progress was Bandar Seri Begawan Investigation and Traffic Control Director Pengiran Hj Sulaiman bin Pengiran Hj Mohammad, with cooperation from Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd headed by Emergency, Response and Security Chief Awang Rosman bin Haji Abd Rahman.

Prior to the roadblock inspections, Investigation and Traffic Control Department Director Pengiran Hj Sulaiman, in a speech, explained that the campaign is aimed at making efforts to lower the accident rate and to raise awareness on road offences to road users.

Road accidents across the country are among issues discussed by the Road Safety Council Committee.

As there are still many road users that commit road offences unknowingly, the campaign serves to change this behaviour. The campaign is also conducted along areas that are accident-prone that sometimes lead to deaths.

The representative from Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Awang Rosman, stressed that there are still drivers that fail to abide by the traffic rules by speedeing through traffic light areas when traffic lights are in red along Jalan Tengah near the housing areas of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd. He wished that drivers along the areas were sensitive to the safety of road users, especially pedestrians that mostly consist of school children.

Meanwhile, the Belait District Investigation and Traffic Control Department since early this year has recorded a total of 47 court summons and 251 cases of compound fines.

Offences that are frequently found through speed trap and routine investigations are speeding with a total of 200 cases.

Apart from Jalan Tengah, some areas that are also prone to road accidents in the district are the roundabout areas heading toward Belait Town and also the Seria Bypass area.

Yesterday's campaign started at 8am and ended at 11am.
