What was meant to be a test drive of a used car turned into a manhunt for the driver as he drove off with the car and never returned.

The incident unfolded yesterday at a used car dealer in Kg Pandan in Kuala Belait.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, asked to take a used Subaru WRX vehicle for a test drive, sped off the compound and never returned.

The man went to the second-hand auto dealer in the Kg Pandan shophouse commercial area at about 1pm and asked to drive a silver colour Subaru WRX, 2003 model, which was parked outside the compound of the business premises.

According to the used car company manager, the culprit called the salesgirl to accompany him to the car as he expressed his interest in the Subaru vehicle and wanted to take it on a test drive by himself.

The salesgirl handed the keys and told him that he could only take the car for a test drive within the compound of the shophouse area.

The salesgirl then waited for him to return for over 30 minutes, but he never came back. The man has been described as being in his 20s and speaking fluent Malay.

At about 3pm, the second-hand auto dealer filed a police report.
Fortunately, the store has a surveillance camera and it captured the video footage of the culprit in the business premises.

Police arrived at the used car dealer's premises to take a look at the surveillance video in order to identify the culprit.

The auto dealer displays about 20 imported and used vehicles in the compound of the business premises.

The stolen vehicle was on sale for B$29,800 and when the car was taken for a test drive it carried the registration number BAC 5527.

Police in Kuala Belait confirmed receiving the report and are currently investigating the case.
