Two of the cars damaged in the 12-vehicle crash.
A chain accident involving 12 cars caused a major traffic jam along the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Highway (near the golf course) heading to Gadong yesterday morning.

According to the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), this was the first time an accident has happened involving 12 cars at one spot.

The police report stated that initially eight cars were involved in the accident. This happened after a car, which the police said fled the scene, quickly changed lanes to the right, which resulted in a four-wheel drive coming behind to break abruptly causing the chain crash.

The driver of the ninth car, who was about 50 metres away, also had to break suddenly, which led to another few crashes behind him. The crashes behind the ninth car eventually pushed it towards the first chain crash, leading to a 12-car crash.

Police officials said everything happened in a split second. The RBPF received a call at 8.25am and 10 personnel from the Berakas Police Station were deployed at the scene to control the traffic.

An eyewitness said the last of the 12 cars sustained the biggest damage. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The RBPF reminded motorists to keep a minimum 'one car' distance during rush hour commutes. Motorists have also been reminded to always be patient during peak hours.
