The Panaga Police Reserve Unit team carrying out a roadblock along the main road of Kampong Sungai Teraban.

A family of three in Kampong Sungai Teraban, Kuala Belait had to endure terrifying moments when five masked men armed with parangs intruded into their house yesterday, robbed them of their valuables and left the husband and wife slightly injured but badly shaken.

The group of armed robbers, all believed to be foreigners, broke into the house at about 1am through the rear gate.

The house belongs to a man in his 40s who operates a business at the Belait market. When the incident happened, he was with his wife and 11-year-old child.

When contacted, the wife was unable to provide any details of the intrusion as she was traumatised by the incident.

According to sources, the head of the family suffered bruises near his eyes, while the wife sustained minor injuries on her hand. The robbers reportedly fled in three vehicles belonging to the family with cash, jewellery and mobile phones valued at $30,000. However, one of the stolen cars was recovered yesterday.

The Panaga Police Reserve Unit team conducted a roadblock along Kampong Sungai Teraban road, close to the victim's home and also along the road leading to Sungai Tujoh Control Post from 7am yesterday morning.

Kampong Sungai Teraban village head Awang Haji Mohd Mersidi bin Haji Mohd Shara said he came to know of the robbery after a resident informed him that police were conducting an investigation at the house around 5am.

He also said that he received several calls from the villagers who expressed concern that the robbers could still be lurking in the village.
The village head said he was unable to get information on the case from relevant parties.

"I am unable to provide accurate information to the villagers as I am not properly informed of the situation. I can only advise the villagers to exercise extra caution and make sure their homes are secured and locked," he said.

Police declined to provide further details but said they are investigating and a hunt is on for the culprits.
