Vehicles and workers quarters in selected locations near the border in the Belait District were searched for signs of illegal narcotics and other contraband goods by various enforcement agencies in one of three major operations that were carried out Tuesday evening in a bid to eradicate criminal activities in the district.

The joint operation involved more than 30 enforcement officers and personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force, Immigration and National Registration Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the Belait District.

The annual end-of-year operation that was spearheaded by the Belait District Police was carried out in view of the rampant crime activities involving the smuggling of drugs, contraband and also drivers violating the road traffic rules and regulations.

The first operation began at around 8pm and was carried out near the Sungai Tujoh control post, targeting vehicles that were entering and exiting the country. The operation was led by Acting DSP Haji Harun bin Ahmad, Commanding Traffic Police Officer Belait District. One traffic violator was caught in the operation.

The Belait Police Traffic Control and Investigation Department meanwhile conducted a second roadblock operation along the Lumut Bypass from 9pm to 11.30pm. In that operation, 12 traffic offenders were issued with compound fines

The roadblock was conducted by 14 personnel from the department and three officers led by Assistant ASP Nurol Faezal Mt Faisal Al-Surfri, the Senior Operations Officer.

The third joint operation, which was led by Assistant Commanding Police ASP Norani bin Hussain, targetted workers quarters in Kuala Balai, Kampong Lumut and Kuala Belait. Officers from the Islamic Religious Department also joined the third operation to keep tabs on immoral activities in the district.

During the raids, the Customs Preventive and Intelligence Section Belait led by Officer Awg Ibrahim bin Hj Kamis arrested two foreign workers for having in their possession alcohol without the proper permits. The two were brought to the section for further investigation.

The joint raids ended at 4am yesterday morning.
