The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) with joint cooperation from the Royal Brunei Police Force conducted a roadblock at Sungai Liang in Belait District to ensure that amateur radio users in the country possess licence and AITI-approved equipment.

According to Ak Saiful Rosman, the Acting Manager of AITI, anyone caught using unlicensed radio equipment can be punished under Section 34 and 35 of the Telecommunications Order, 2001.

Under the Order, anyone caught using unlicensed radio equipments can be fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed for three years.
As of yesterday, the AITI has conducted four roadblocks. Similar operations have been staged in Muara, Berakas and Sengkurong.
So far, four radio owners have been issued with notices to renew their licences. Another case, meanwhile, is still under investigation.

Fifteen police officers and eight personnel of the AITI were involved in yesterday's operation at Sungai Liang, which began at 3.45pm. The inspection ended about two hours later.
