In the interest of safeguarding public safety, the Land Transport Department (LTD) will not hesitate to take action against any public transport vehicle that is found to have broken the traffic rules and regulations.

The warning was made by Hj Suaib, Senior Enforcement Officer from the Land Transport Department following a surprise operation to check on public transport vehicles yesterday morning, at the road in front of the Damuan Recreational Park.

A total of 66 commercial vehicles including buses were inspected during the more-than-two-hour operation.

Throughout the operation, 23 compound fines were issued and the drivers of 19 commercial vehicles including public buses were instructed to "retest" the vehicles at the LTD's Vehicle Inspection Centre.

The operation was conducted by a team of seven LTD personnel led by Hj Suaib.

"We have received a number of complaints from the public about drivers of public transport vehicles ignoring traffic rules and regulations, which can cause danger to the public," said Hj Suaib in an interview with the Bulletin.

"Some of the complaints were of speeding and running a red light. I hope that today's operation will raise the drivers' awareness on road safety and regulations."

In an apparent reminder to drivers of commercial vehicles and public transport, Hj Suaib further said that repeated offenders could be required to re-sit the highway code test "because the repeat offenders show that they have yet to get a grip of understanding the Road Traffic Act'. Should the driver fail the test, the Director of Land Transport can revoke the licence of that driver.

The Senior Enforcement Officer also reminded private companies with vehicles on the road to help caution their drivers on driving carefully and complying with the Road Traffic Act.
