Border hoppers, who returned to the Sultanate from the Kuala Lurah checkpoint on Thursday night, were caught off-guard when police personnel from the Traffic Control and Investigation Department, enforcement officers from the Land Transport Department (LTD) and religious enforcement officers conducted spot checks.

The spot check was conducted hot on the heels when the police announced several hours earlier that they would be organising week-long operations in the next three months to raise awareness and educate the public on road safety.

An LTD enforcement officer said two van drivers were issued with summons and another 11 compounds to several other drivers.

A driver, who used his saloon car to bring vegetables into the country without using a "P" permit obtained from the Motor Transport Licensing Authorities, was also caught. He has been charged under Section 56(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 68, and may face a penalty of $10,000 fine and six-month imprisonment.

The operation ran from 8pm until 10. 30pm.
